The Library contains a vast collection of monographs and journals acquired since 1861 in many areas of natural history and zoology.

Archives

Archives include manuscripts, photographs, field notebooks, art work, specimen information, artifacts relating to MCZ Directors, Curators, staff and contributors.

VISITOR POLICIES

  • Circulation

  • Material from the general collection will be loaned to faculty, staff, and students of Harvard. Policies for borrowing vary depending on affiliation with Harvard. For more information on borrowing privileges, see the library’s official circulation policy or ask at the Reference Desk. An ID card is required for all circulation transactions.

  • Access

  • Access is open to those with a Harvard ID, membership in the Museum (Friends of the HMNH), alumni of Harvard and Radcliffe, visiting researchers or students/faculty from other schools. The general public may use the library with permission. Books less than 100 years old circulate to anyone with a current Harvard ID. Periodicals circulate locally, with permission, to faculty, graduate students & staff.Standard borrowing time is 4 weeks for any Harvard ID holder. Renewals may be requested online in the Hollis Catalog, in person, or by telephone. Overdue notices are sent automatically by the Circulation system. Reserves circulate for 2 hours. Visitors to Special Collections are expected to sign in at each visit. Please call 495-2475 if you have questions.
