May 30, 2014—Throughout April, the Gutman Library’s first-floor gallery space was home to a collection of collaboratively created works by underprivileged African American youths. The “Life Pieces to Masterpieces” exhibit, comprising 29 pieces, touched on subject matters ranging from Cirque du Soleil to absent fathers to Mitt Romney.

The artists, ages 3 to 25, live in some of Washington, DC’s most volatile and poverty-stricken neighborhoods. Sarah Thomas, vice president of the Harvard Library, delivered the inaugural Judith Nadler Vision Lecture at the University of Chicago’s Joseph Regenstein Library on May 22. Thomas’s talk, “Future-Proofing the Research Library,” examined the many ways that academic libraries are adapting to the changes in their campus roles. Read the full story.

May 27, 2014—The Library is on track to implement Primo - a new scholarly search tool - this summer.

An earlier note outlined some of the background research that was conducted and key features of the Primo system. More recently, teams have been hard at work on implementing what will be called HOLLIS+.  

The Primo team is currently working on revised content and design for the navigation bar that appears at the top of HOLLIS, HOLLIS Classic, E-Research@Harvard and other Harvard Library web sites, guided by analytics and usability tests of possible revisions. May 27, 2014—Since the April update, planning began for a new series of DRS demo meetings to get early feedback from users on new development. In this update, Chris Vicary, lead software engineer for the DRS, explains what users can expect from these meetings and the mutual benefit they will provide to the development team and users.  

“These meetings will be held quarterly to coincide with releases of new features. They will begin with a review of recently completed enhancements, followed by a demonstration of that work, and end with a preview of upcoming features to be included in the next release," Vicary said.
