Dear Colleagues,

There was much interest at the all-staff meeting in what the Library’s role in the Campaign will be. I attended the Campaign launch on Saturday evening and connected with several members of the Visiting Committee and other library supporters. If you click on the Campaign website, you will see that the first aspiration begins with the library as an illustration. The Campaign website is intended to be dynamic, which will allow us to update it often. In addition, we will be developing some Campaign literature which will showcase our...

September 24, 2013—Jane Kelly, Historical & Special Collections assistant, and Margaret Peachy, curator of digital collections, both of the Harvard Law School Library, said they felt lucky to have the opportunity to curate an exhibition that coincides with Celebration 60, the upcoming 60th-anniversary celebration of the first women graduates of Harvard Law School (HLS).

“Anyone in Historical & Special Collections would have been happy to work on this exhibition,” Kelly said, “but because we’ve been processing the Red Set Ephemera collection, we already had some amazing material we knew we could share. “We hold our orientation to the library a few weeks into the semester so that students can learn the services we provide in a relaxed and informal way,” said Meg Kribble, research librarian and outreach coordinator at the Law School Library. “The day isn’t about teaching research techniques; it’s more about showing the students that we’re approachable, knowledgeable and willing to help.” Other Law Library staff involved in organizing the event were Mindy Kent, manager of...

The Library made an impressive showing at the 2013 Society of American Archivists annual meeting, with seven staff members presenting papers and chairing sessions:

  • Kate Bowers, collections services archivist for metadata, systems and standards, and Skip Kendall, senior electronic records analyst/archivist, both of the Harvard University Archives, spoke about the technical, legal and political challenges of documenting the Occupy Harvard movement during the session “Occupy Archives.”

  • Emily R. Novak Gustainis, head of collection services at Countway Library’s Center for the History of Medicine, presented a paper on implementing and evaluating multilevel processing at the session “There is No Going Back, Only Forward: Value-Added Processing in the Age of MPLP.”...

Dear colleagues,

I will hold two all-staff meetings on Wednesday, September 18 to update staff members on current and future library activities. There will be an opportunity for questions, and staff members may also send questions and/or topic suggestions in advance to Jennifer Ward (jennifer_ward@harvard.edu). Both the 9–10am and 3–4pm sessions will be held in Askwith Hall on the first floor of Longfellow Hall at 13 Appian Way in Cambridge. Details on dialing in to a session will be shared early next week. A summary of the sessions will be posted online and included in the September 24 Library Update. These meetings are intended for library staff to come together, learn about projects under way, and hear about issues of...
