Overview
The Archive's collection of over 25,000 audiovisual items includes important examples of contemporary and classic world cinema, documentary, avant-garde, Hollywood movies, American independent film, animation, educational films and newsreels. The HFA's collections also include audio recordings of visiting filmmakers as well as paper ephemera, including posters and stills, from the promotion of films of various countries. The Harvard Film Archive collection is available to Harvard faculty and students as well as researchers and scholars from outside the University. All research inquiries should be submitted via e-mail to Bob Sennett (rsennett@fas.harvard.edu), Bibliographer and Research Liaison for Film. The films in the Harvard Film Archive collections do not circulate for private use by individuals; however, films are available for Harvard classroom screenings and loans to other film archives and institutions. Students, filmmakers, artists and researchers may use the collections on-site at the Harvard Film Archive. The Cinematheque screenings are open to the general public. The Carpenter Center has an elevator which services the HFA. Listening assisted devices are available during public screenings for the hearing impaired.
