Core Collection

In support of research, teaching and learning at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), the Library collects and circulates current materials in traditional and new areas of scholarship. Subject areas collected at an instructional support and research level include: climate science and policy; crisis management; defense policy; economic development; economic policy; energy and energy policy; environmental economics; environmental policy; health policy; housing policy; human rights; international development; international relations; international security; judgment and decision making; media studies and journalism; nonprofit sector policy and management; policy analysis; political institutions; political and professional ethics; public administration; public finance; public leadership; science and technology policy; social policy; sustainable development; U.S. federal, state and local government; U.S. politics and elections; urban policy.

Recommend a Purchase

The HKS Library welcomes recommendations for purchasing books, audiovisual materials, journals, and databases. Please send your suggestions to Library Director Leslie Donnell at leslie_donnellatharvard [dot] edu.

Journals

We subscribe to a selection of current affairs journals and magazines in print for browsing and reading in the Library. We also provide access to thousands of scholarly, peer reviewed electronic journals through Find E-Journals.

Reference

General and subject-specific reference works, including statistics, encyclopedias, handbooks, and directories are available for use in the Library. Many of the resources in our reference collection are also available online via HOLLIS.

Course Materials & Reserves

We provide a robust course materials and reserves service, collecting and providing access to digital course materials, books, and videos.

Dissertations and Student Papers

HKS doctoral dissertations along with Policy Analysis Exercises (PAEs) and Second Year Policy Analysis Papers (SYPAs) are collected in print. The doctoral dissertations from 1990 onward are also available online in Dissertations and Theses Full-Text.

Videos

Our video collection consists primarily of commercially produced films and documentaries on topics related to public policy, human rights, and global affairs.

Archives

The Library collects and preserves select administrative, curricular, and scholarly output of the Harvard Kennedy School.

  • Access to the HKS Library is limited to current Harvard ID holders and HKS Alumni. Exceptions may be made to those with research needs that can only be met by the HKS Library’s print collections.
