Ivies Plus RTL 2014: November 7, 2014

Research, Teaching, and Learning librarians from Ivies Plus institutions gathered at Harvard Law School on November 7, 2014 to share ideas and best practices and to continue as a community to build cross-institution connections.






Peggy Newell, Deputy Provost at Harvard, framed the day's goals by asking us to consider how the library's broader mission ties into our everyday responsibilities and interactions with our institutions and patrons, especially in light of the constant changes libraries face today.



Members of a panel discussion offered various viewpoints concerning library integration into the academic life of the campus. Panelists weighed in on the role of collaboration among various academic and administrative departments, the library’s role in the dynamic nature of knowledge, how to accommodate library spaces and services to new user needs, and the complexity of library systems at large research institutions.

Roundtable Discussions


Participants in Wrap-Up Session


Conference participants broke into small groups and held facilitated roundtable discussions around specialized topics proposed by attendees ahead of time. These topics included “Integrating Primary Sources into Undergraduate Instruction,” “Embedded Librarianship,” “Optimizing the RTL Environment,” and several others (see the complete list of topics and their descriptions in the handout link below). The amount of time given to the roundtables allowed for in-depth conversations, the main points of which were then shared back with the entire conference.

Ivies Plus Participants


For a final collaborative activity, Carol Rolheiser asked the small groups to share focused reflections on the day. To ensure the reflections were concise, each small group was given a virtual $2 to spend, where each word cost 10 cents. In addition, groups were allocated 50 cents to provide tips for the future.



Closing Remarks


Sarah Thomas, Vice President for the Harvard Library and Roy E. Larsen Librarian for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, brought closure to the event in summary remarks echoing the themes of collaboration and the importance of incorporating the academic mission into the library’s work.
