An early owner interleaved this copy of the first edition and has carefully supplied in manuscript the lines and notes that accreted to subsequent editions. The minute manuscript catchwords Time was direct the reader to the published satire’s original Horatian opening, “Time was, ere yet in these degenerate days / Ignoble themes obtained mistaken praise....”
