From the time of the American Revolution, Black Bostonians played prominent roles in the struggle against slavery and injustice. Organizations such as the Prince Hall Masons provided crucial and often militant leadership. This certificate of initiation into the Prince Hall Masons dating from 1799 is signed by founder Prince Hall. Future members of the Prince Hall Masons include abolitionists David Walker, John Rock, and Lewis Hayden.
