Alexander Gardner, photographer. "The politics and poetry of New England": carte-de-visite, 1863.

In December 1863 Longfellow with his son Ernest traveled to Washington to meet his oldest son Charley, recently wounded in a skirmish at New Hope Church, Virginia. While in the capitol, he and Sumner sat for this iconic portrait. At Longfellow's request, Sumner obtained an honorable discharge for Charley.
