 Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), "Voyage of the good ship Union": autograph manuscript, 1862. | Holmes wrote several poems against slavery. "The Voyage of the Good Ship Union" details a metaphorical journey of a heroic ship, the Union, traveling south. Its final line, "One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, One Nation, evermore!" indicates Holmes' desire for a united country free from slavery. James T. Fields had the manuscript bound with a portrait and an autograph letter from the author.
