Longfellow's elegy for Hawthorne was first published in James Fields's Atlantic Monthly in 1864and subsequently in this small, exquisitely illustrated and bound volume which contains only thirteen pieces. Longfellow inscribed this copy on 18 December 1866 to "Mrs. E.A. Wadsworth," Emmeline Austin Wadsworth, a close friend of and Beacon Street neighbor of Fanny Appleton.
