Thackeray. Caricature of William and Isabella Thackeray. Pencil, undated.

Following the publication of Flore et Zéphyr, Thackeray wrote to Isabella, “My father says I could not do better than to marry, my mother says the same. I need not say that I agree with the opinion of my parents - so, dearest…we will in a few months, go & hear Bishop Luscombe read, and be married, and have children, & be happy ever after.” They were married on August 20 at the British Embassy in Paris. In this portrait Thackeray affectionately caricatures the couple’s difference in height.
