And ye five other wandering Bards, that move
In sweet accord of harmony and love,
C_____dge and S__th_y, L___d, and L__be, and Co.
Tune all your mystic harps to praise Lepaux.

Poetry of the Anti-Jacobin (London, 1799).

Edited by William Gifford, this volume collects the satiric and parodic verse that appeared in the Anti-Jacobin, a newspaper founded by Tory statesman and future Prime Minister George Canning (1770-1827). Canning’s parody “New Morality” seeks a restoration of traditional British values while criticizing radical poets such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, Charles Lloyd, and Charles Lamb. (Revellière-Lepaux was a member of the French Directory and an avowed atheist.)
