Lord Byron (1788-1824). English Bards, and Scotch Reviewers, 3rd ed. (London, 1810 [i.e., 1817]). Throughout the nineteenth century, English Bards, and Scotch Reviewers was a popular text for extra-illustration. In this example, leaves from a spurious “Third” edition (the paper is watermarked “G. Pike 1817”) have been laid into larger leaves and sixty-nine engraved portraits inserted. The romantic image of Byron landing from a boat was engraved in 1830 by William Finden, after a painting by George Sanders that is now in the Royal Collection at Windsor. The print originally served as the frontispiece to Moore’s Life of Byron. In 1865, the New York publisher Charles B. Richardson issued a deluxe edition of the satire with wide margins to satisfy the needs of the extra-illustrator. |
