Las Meninas

Diaghilev fell in love with Spain on his first visit in 1916.  In this country he found a drama and folklore that reminded him of Russia, and he began immediately to conceive of works that paid homage to Spanish traditions.  Las Meninas was the first of these, inspired by the Velázquez painting by the same name, which Diaghilev saw in the Prado on his visit.
