As a Prince Hall Mason and leader of the Massachusetts General Colored Association, David Walker articulated the growing militancy of the black community in his Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World. The Appeal called for community uplift and education, and the abolition of slavery by any means, including violence, if necessary. Walker voiced the radical nature of black abolitionism and his work inspired fear, repression, and retaliation in the slaveholding South. This first edition belonged to the Massachusetts statesman Edward Everett.
