Boston's Crusade Against Slavery

Photograph

C. Seaver, Jr., photographer (Boston, Mass.) William Lloyd Garrison and his daughter Fanny (Helen Francis) , carte-de-visite, ca. 1856.

As founding editor of The Liberator and the foremost abolitionist in the nation, Garrison became known for hard-hitting journalism and speeches that often masked his gracious demeanor, as revealed in this portrait with his daughter Fanny. The fifth of seven children, Fanny liked to warm her hands on her father's bald head. His family was unusually close.
