In this letter to Channing, Higginson discusses Hayden's belief that his pistol shot killed the courthouse guard. "That he believes he fired the fatal shot there is no question ... He said he had no ball to fit his pistol and loaded it with a slug – (a slug if it strikes sidewise, as it may, would make such a wound" as described on the death certificate.
