Higginson was a writer, Unitarian minister, social activist, and militant abolitionist. From 1862 through 1864, he served as colonel of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first African American regiment sanctioned by the federal government during the Civil War. In the aftermath of the war, he continued to fight for the rights of freed slaves, women, and other disfranchised social groups.
