"Glory, hally, hallelujah!!" (Gloucester, Mass., 1861): song sheet.

This song sheet of "John Brown's Body," first published as the "John Brown Song," includes an image of the song's eponymous hero, the militant abolitionist John Brown, who was hanged in 1859 after organizing an attempted slave insurrection at Harpers Ferry. Throughout the Union (and Confederacy), soldiers believed that Brown's raid had been a central catalyst leading to disunion and civil war.
