Concord Transcendentalists and the Legacy of John Brown

Photograph

Warren (Cambridgeport, Mass.) John Brown, cabinet photograph of a bust by Edwin Brackett.

In 1859 George Stearns, an accomplice who contributed money and arms for Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, commissioned this marble bust of Brown by the sculptor Edwin Brackett. The bust was not unveiled, however, until 1 January 1863 at a party at Stearns' mansion to celebrate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Emerson and Sanborn attended the party, which Stearns referred to as "the John Brown Party." They were celebrating Brown's actions as much as Lincoln's.
