Concord Transcendentalists and the Legacy of John Brown

Photograph

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) "Slavery in Massachusetts" from The Liberator; in a scrapbook formed by Amos Bronson Alcott.

Alcott was a prominent Concord transcendentalist, abolitionist, friend of Emerson, and early admirer of Thoreau. Alcott's scrapbook includes a clipping from The Liberator on Thoreau's speech, "Slavery in Massachusetts," delivered in Framingham on 4 July 1854 to protest the rendition of Anthony Burns, a Boston fugitive, back into slavery. He militantly condemns the federal government, foreshadowing his defense of John Brown.
