Founded in 1855 the Saturday Club provided a space for men of influence to discuss important issues of the day. Club membership was not only a status symbol, but it opened doors to Boston's preeminent intellectuals. With this ballot, founding member Ralph Waldo Emerson recommends his friend Charles Sumner for membership. Sumner collaborated with several other members, including Emerson, in their efforts to abolish slavery.
