The photographer, a paparazzo among nineteenth-century New Englanders, showed up unbidden outside Craigie House on 20 September 1878, much to Longfellow's chagrin: "there stood another photographer with his deadly instrument aimed at us" (to Eunice Farley Felton, 20 September 1878).
