Astride his horse on the road from Malaga to Granada, Longfellow emulates his hero Lord Byron. The caption comes from the first Canto of Lord Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-1818), a poem about a world-weary man seeking rejuvenation in foreign travel: "To horse-to horse-he quits, forever quits / A scene of peace though soothing to the soul."
