"Kéramos," a poem about the making of pottery, appeared in Harper's Magazine in December 1877; Longfellow was paid the princely sum of $1,000. Shown here is one of six copies of the poem that were printed and stitched together for Longfellow's personal use only.

In "Kéramos," pottery, practiced by the Dutch, French, Italians, Egyptians, Chinese, and Japanese, becomes a metaphor for the global reach of poetry, as the great uniter of humankind, regardless of cultural, class, and linguistic differences.
