Emigration and Imagination: Boston's Connection with Haiti

Jean Pierre Boyer was Haiti's President from 1818 to 1843, and during that time he sought to establish his country as a prime destination for blacks emigrating from the United States. This letter to Jacob Peabody of Boston was written by Inginac, secretary general in Boyer's cabinet. He thanked Peabody for his help in the safe passage of "five coloured men" to Haiti, where they found employment on Inginac's coffee plantation.
