This copy of British abolitionist James Stephen's Buonaparte in the West Indies; or, the History of Toussaint Louverture, the African Hero was owned by James Russell Lowell – poet, writer, and professor at Harvard – and is filled with his notes and commentary. In 1846 Lowell became a contributing editor to the National Anti-Slavery Standard; he later helped found the Saturday Club, comprised of fellow abolitionists Charles Sumner, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, among others who regularly met at Boston's historic Parker House.
