Emigration and Imagination: Boston's Connection with Haiti

Photograph

James Redpath (1833-1891) "A classed catalogue of Haytian literature and of works relating to Hayti": manuscript, 1860.

Redpath, a Scottish journalist and abolitionist who emigrated to Boston, compiled this catalogue of Haitian literature for the Boston-based Haytian Bureau of Emigration, which was founded with $20,000 provided by the government of Haiti. His catalogue includes over seventy titles on that country. A similar catalogue belonging to Charles Sumner is also held by Houghton Library.
