Haverhill native John Greenleaf Whittier was one of many abolitionist authors who wrote poems about Toussaint. This poem was included in his collection on slavery entitled "Voices of Freedom." The engraving shows an angel descending to proclaim freedom throughout Haiti. Wrote Whittier: "Dark Haytien! – for the time shall come / Yea, even now is nigh / When, every where, thy name shall be / Redeemed from color's infamy."
