“I think the word pragmatism has been very unlucky. Everyone takes it as exclusive of purely intellectual interests, or purely mental adaptations to reality, making us signify that all our agreements with reality must be of an externally and immediately utilitarian sort. You don’t do this, so I bless you,” James wrote to Strong in 1907.
