A widely circulated double portrait of Senator Charles Sumner (1811-1874) and Longfellow, taken in December 1863 in Washington, DC, where Longfellow had gone to bring home his son Charley, who had been wounded near New Hope Church, Virginia. Gardner, who became famous as a photographer of Civil War battle scenes, had just set up his own studio.
