The city-dwelling Sumner ("he who knows not grass from grain") encounters a calf on Longfellow's property and, in the attempt to touch it, inevitably comes to grief, an episode that greatly amused "the spectators of this catastrophe," his friend Longfellow, Fanny Longfellow, and their son Charley.
