Scene design by Christopher Wood for the ballet Roméo et Juliette This smaller scene design was executed by the British artist Christopher Wood toward the end of his short lifetime. It had been Diaghilev’s idea at first for this to have been an “English” ballet. But ultimately the idea was abandoned, and Wood’s designs were replaced by those by Miró. Wood’s concept more literally represented the idea of this ballet, which was to show the backstage activity in the course of rehearsal for a ballet version of Romeo and Juliet. Produced ten years before Prokofiev’s famous score was composed, this ballet was originally titled Romeo and Juliet en Ballet. |
