Photograph of Maria Dalbaicín in the ballet The Sleeping Princess

Maria Dalbaicín was a member of a prominent Spanish family of dancers, and one of her brothers was a well-known bullfighter. Diaghilev first engaged her to perform in Cuadro Flamenco, a traditional Flamenco performance that Diaghilev presented along with the Ballets Russes. Afterward he re-engaged her to appear in Massine’s Le Tricorne (in which she appeared opposite Massine as the Miller’s Wife), and also in the Danse Arabe in The Sleeping Princess, shown here.
