Boston's Crusade Against Slavery

Photograph

Frank Rowell, photographer (Boston, Mass.) John Albion Andrew, carte-de-visite, ca. 1860.

John Andrew's defense of John Brown catapulted him to the forefront of Massachusetts politics. Andrew was elected governor in 1860 by a large majority, which outraged the South and contributed to secession, war, and emancipation.
