All the Longfellow children were encouraged to draw and write as much as possible, often collaborating with their father, who dated, annotated, and saved their efforts. Note the explanation he added to this early effort by Ernest the future painter: "Attempt and failure of Erny to draw a Book-case which caused tears and despair. March 5 1851."
