The Boston studio of Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Hawes had a reputation for producing "natural portraits," but this one, given the unhappy expression on the faces of Charley and Erny, might have come out a bit too natural. Fanny's wrist is visible behind Charley's neck, maintaining a steady grip on him to make sure that this opportunity for a family portrait was not wasted.
