The four-year-old Annie appears in the right foreground; the six-year-old Edith to the left, and Alice, aged nine, to the right rear. The painting, which still hangs in the dining-room of Craigie House, was frequently reproduced. Read's evident limitations as a painter led to rumors that Annie had been born without arms. |
