A sign of the popular esteem in which readers held him was the publication of The Longfellow Birthday-Book, arranged by Charlotte Fiske Bates. Note the fulsome quotation Bates picked for 27 February, Longfellow's birthday: "Ah yes! We all / Love him from the bottom of our hearts" (from Longfellow's The Golden Legend). On display here is a copy given by Longfellow, on his own birthday, to his daughter Edith (inscribed "To Edith, with her father's love. Feb. 27. 1881"). |
