These off-white shoes, which have cardboard soles and are lined with hand-sewn cotton, sport a diamond-shaped motif in orange, blue, and yellow. Miss M. C. Collins, a missionary to the Dakota Indians in Oahe, Hughes County, in the Dakota Territory, sent them to Longfellow in February 1882 as a birthday gift. "Are you not the friend of us all?" she asked in the letter that accompanied her present. |
