Alison Donnelly recently joined the Harvard Library as the director of financial planning and analysis. She worked most recently as finance director at Pearson in its Higher Education, Learning Technologies Group. Donnelly holds a BA in economics from Colgate University and an MBA in finance and international management from the NYU Stern School of Business.

With the enthusiastic support of the University Librarian Robert Darnton and the Chair of the FAS Standing Committee on the Library Joyce Chaplin, I am writing to share the exciting news that Sarah Thomas, the recently appointed Vice President for the Harvard Library (HL), has agreed to lead the FAS libraries. As the Roy E. Larsen Librarian for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, she will oversee and coordinate all FAS libraries, including Harvard College Library (HCL).
Before joining Harvard in August, Sarah headed the University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries for more than six years, served two terms on the Visiting Committee to Oversee the Harvard University Library, and started her career as a preliminary cataloger in Widener Library. September 24, 2013—Sarah Thomas, vice president for the Harvard Library, addressed staff in Askwith Hall on September 19, 2013 to introduce herself and plans for the direction of the Harvard Library. She also welcomed questions from the audience and said she would do her best to answer any questions submitted via email as well. Thomas said she would like to have at least one all-staff meeting per semester, or two or three times per year, as she welcomes the opportunity to engage Library staff members directly in a face-to-face dialogue. Some of these meetings will have a component of information, she said, but she also likes the “give and take” of hearing what’s on staff members’ minds and a chance for her to speak informally in a way that is candid and conveys more that one can read in an email. There was much interest at the all-staff meeting in what the Library’s role in the Campaign will be. I attended the Campaign launch on Saturday evening and connected with several members of the Visiting Committee and other library supporters. If you click on the Campaign website, you will see that the first aspiration begins with the library as an illustration.
