Solti’s first performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra of Schubert’s last symphonic work was as guest conductor in 1965. “I was in heaven conducting Schubert’s “Great” C Major Symphony with this magnificent ensemble” (Memoirs, 148). He later went on to record the work with the Vienna Philharmonic. “Schubert is for me the most tragic figure in the history of music. He produced so much magnificent work, but died young without having received any significant recognition” (219). This score of Schubert’s symphony is one of the most heavily annotated in the Solti collection. Shown here is the transition between the opening Andante introduction of the first movement and the following Allegro; the relationship between the two tempi remains a long-standing challenge for the work’s interpreters.
