A number of Harvard affiliates have recently received e-mails appearing to be from the library_admin@harvard.edu address, signed Corinna Baksik. The e-mails ask for users to enter their HUID/PIN into a web page that looks like Harvard’s, but is actually a replica page hosted outside of the US.

Please note that these e-mails are SPAM and should be deleted. To Harvard staff who receive inquiries from users, please inform the user that no action is necessary on their end. They do NOT have to provide any information, nor should they. If they followed the instructions in the e-mail and entered data into the false web page (identified by the URL ending in .ir), they should change their passwords. Users may change passwords by following the instructions to “Change your existing PIN” at...

Ezra Pound recordingThe Woodberry Poetry Room in Lamont Library holds one-of-a-kind recordings of some of the 20th century’s most important poets — Auden, Eliot and Frost, to name a few — reading their work. Those voices will soon reach a wider audience thanks to plans to preserve these unique materials, many of which are stored in fragile media vulnerable to decay. New funding will allow the Poetry Room to digitize these recordings and make them publicly available online. Read the full article in HCL News.

A message from Steve Gass and Diane Geraci, co-interim directors, MIT Libraries:

Dear Colleagues:

We are grateful for the many expressions of sympathy and caring we continue to receive from near and far that have sustained us and the library staff during the last six weeks. Many of you asked to be kept informed about plans for a service and charity for Ann.

In conjunction with Ann's family we have now established both. MIT will host a memorial service and reception on Jan. 31, 2014 at 3:00 pm. This celebration of Ann's life will be open to the academic and professional community both locally and nationally. We have also established a gift fund in memory of Ann—the Ann J. Wolpert Strategic Initiatives Fund to support the MIT Libraries. Bonny Kellermann '72, Director of Memorial Gifts, can be contacted at...

November 19, 2013—The File Information Tool Set (FITS) was created by Harvard Library to support the activities of the Digital Preservation Service (DRS). Since that time FITS has gained a lot of traction and has been incorporated into the workflows of institutions worldwide, open-source repository platforms such as Archivematica and Islandora and preservation planning tools like C3PO. With increased usage, various organizations have wanted to extend FITS to...
