Reproductions

Researchers may use digital cameras in our reading room to create personal reference copies, subject to reference staff approval.

The Harvard University Archives can provide digital reproductions or photocopies of most holdings, depending on the physical condition, format, and date of the originals.

Reproductions of Archives collections are provided for personal research use only. For information regarding permission to publish reproductions, please see Permissions.

Low-resolution scans and photocopies

Low-resolution reference scans and photocopies may be ordered from the Archives, subject to certain limitations (size, format, and physical condition of originals).

  • Copy requests are limited to no more than 50 pages.
  • The cost is $0.60 per page.
  • Pre-payment by check or cash is required. Checks should be made payable to the Harvard University Archives. Credit cards are not accepted at this time.
  • Please submit copy requests using the request form available in the reading room or by email to archives_reference@harvard.edu.
  • Requests must include specific citations (call number, box number, folder title, item description) for each item.

High-resolution digital copies

High-resolution digital copies of Archives material can be ordered from Harvard Library Imaging Services.  Costs depend on the size and format of originals, with additional service and delivery fees. Turnaround time is approximately six weeks.

To place a copy request with Harvard Library Imaging Services:

  • Start the process by registering for an account with Imaging Services.
  • When your account is in place, go to “Request for Photoduplication” under “New Requests” in the left column menu.
  • Complete the online order form, including the call number and/or HOLLIS number fields.
  • When you submit the online order form, Imaging Services staff will reply with cost and delivery information.

Audio-visual recordings

Digital copies of motion picture films, video recordings, and audio recordings may be possible. Turn-around times and costs for audio-visual copy requests vary depending on the format and condition of the original materials. Please contact the Archives reference staff for details.

Copies of Theses, Dissertations, and Prize Papers

Copies of theses, dissertations, and prize papers can be ordered from Harvard Library Imaging Services.

Please note: per University policy, copying of theses, dissertations, and prize papers requires prior written permission from the author for a period of five years after the degree date.
