The great literary scholar Edmond Malone (1741-1812) was Boswell's close friend and crucial collaborator, working closely with him on this work as well as Boswell's biography of Johnson. This copy contains Malone's annotations and corrections for a second edition of the Journal, which was released in 1786. A small advertisement at the back which notes "Preparing for the press, in one volume quarto, The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D." was somewhat inaccurate: the Life would not be published until 1791, by which time it had grown to two hefty volumes. |
