Although Ernest Shepard is unquestionably best known for his illustrations for A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh books, he had a long and varied career as an illustrator and cartoonist. In 1930, G. Bell & Sons commissioned him to illustrate an abridged edition of Boswell's Life, and produced a suite of thirteen drawings, including the title page displayed here, which depicts Boswell and Johnson walking together down a busy London street.
