One of the luminaries of Johnson's circle remembers another in this fragment of an essay on Goldsmith by his close friend Reynolds. It may have been written at the request of Thomas Percy for his biography of Goldsmith. A fuller version was found in the Boswell papers now at Yale.

The regret his friends felt for his loss was perhaps greater than any they had ever before experienced ...Those familys in which he lived in intimacy wish'd him always present and thought every meeting defective or insipid if the Doctor was not among them.
