Thackeray writes “Stanzas to Mary,” undated.
In 1820, Thackeray’s orphaned cousin Mary Graham came to live with Captain and Mrs. Carmichael-Smyth. Four years his junior, she became very close with him , and he later used her as a model for the character of Laura in Pendennis. Displayed here is a poem written by Thackeray to Mary in 1829 or 1830. “Bill” was Thackeray; the “Ned” of the poem is Edward FitzGerald, Thackeray’s Cambridge classmate and close friend.
