Thackeray to his daughter Anny, undated. Private collection. Image may not be reproduced without permission.

Thackeray’s first letter to his daughter Anny (undated).

With their mother in a sanitorium, showing no signs of improvement, and their father in London trying to earn money to support his family, Anny and Minny were sent to live with Thackeray’s parents until 1846. Remembering the trauma of his own separation from his mother at a young age, Thackeray hated to be so far from his daughters, and wrote to them often. This is the earliest extant letter written to Anny, in which Thackeray used a neater and larger hand to assist her reading it.

Private collection.
